Garth Stein Races in the Rain!

Garth Stein, favorite author of Raven Stole the Moon, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Stories, and The Art of Racing in the Rain (which has sold 3 million copies in teh US and another 3 million abroad) was recently featured in a Seattle area news magazine. And what better way to explore Garth Stein’s most successful and celebrated title – by racing in the rain, of course. Literally. King5 correspondent Saint Bryan challenged Garth Stein to a few laps around the PGP Motorsports Park in Kent, WA, and ruminated on the many teachable moments within the book, such as, “Your car goes where your eyes go,” and “What you manifest is before you.”

A Conversation with Reyna Grande, author of The Distance Between Us: How to Engage Your Readers

Reyna Grande, author of Across a Hundred Mountains, Dancing with Butterflies, and The Distance Between Us, is a sought-after speaker at middle/high schools, colleges and universities around the country. Born in Mexico, Reyna was raised by her grandparents after her parents left her behind while they worked in the US. She came to the US at the age of nine as an undocumented immigrant and went on to become the first person in her family to obtain a higher education. Andrew McCarthy, author of The Longest Way Home, Interviews Paul Theroux: “I Hate Vacations”

Speaking with one of his favorite writers Paul Theroux, Andrew McCarthy, author of The Longest Way Home, talks candidly about the craft of travel writing, and the big difference between traveling and vacationing. Both men are avid journey-takers, and their definitions of what it means to be in a foreign place shed light on their work. When Andrew McCarthy asked Paul Theroux how he felt about traveling, Paul replied, “When I’m traveling, I feel small. Biographies vs. Beach Books: Trends in All Campus Reads Selections

In the last decade, common reading programs have become a mainstay for library programming, literary organizations, and college campuses. The rise in First Year Experience, Freshman Reads, and All Campus Reads programs seems to correspond to the decline of core curricula in higher education — as colleges distance themselves from core curricula they find that students still need to have something in common academically. Books in common type programs on campuses have been a convenient answer to that need.
