Journalist Warren St. John made a name for himself in sports journalism, first as a reporter for the New York Times, the New York Observer, Slate, and more, and more recently as an author. His books include the national bestseller Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer (named one of the best books of 2004 by Sports Illustrated and acclaimed the best book on collegiate athletics by The Chronicle of Higher Education) and Outcasts United: An American Town, A Refugee Team and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference. St. John was born and raised in Alabama, studied at Columbia College, and now lives in New York City with his family.
Outcasts United shares the inspiring tale of the Fugees, a soccer team of refugee boys from Africa and the Middle East. When their families are resettled in a small Georgia town—a difficult transition that leaves them already in debt for their plane tickets to America and struggling to survive on slender government assistance—these children face the challenge of adjusting to a strange new world while holding tight to their native culture. Love for soccer bridges the cultural divides, and their passion helps them as they compete and as they struggle to adapt to their new homes.
