The John Burroughs Association has awarded its 2013 John Burroughs Medal award to Dr. Thor Hanson for Feathers. The medal celebrates excellence in natural history writing, and has previously been awarded to Robert Michael Pyle (for Wintergreen), and Barry Lopez.

Feathers shares the delights, wonders, and usefulness of feathers—both in the natural world and human culture—in an accessible, erudite prose. Thor Hanson, a biologist, also attends speaking engagements around the Northwest to discuss nature, feathers, and conservation efforts.
