Cinema-goers and those who follow year-end entertainment award shows will know that one of the most anticipated films of the year hits theaters tomorrow. Still Alice is the harrowing story of one woman’s descent into early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
Based on a self-published book by neurologist and author Lisa Genova, the film has generated significant buzz in Hollywood as well as among critics. The film features an all-star cast led by Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, and Kristen Stewart. Ms. Moore’s performance in Still Alice has been lauded as her best to date, is a predicted Oscar winner, and already earned her a Golden Globe award last week.
In Ms. Moore’s acceptance speech, she mentioned Ms. Genova’s surprise that the book was made into a film at all, considering its subject matter: a middle-aged woman whose mind degenerates as her life unravels. Ms. Genova must be even more surprised at the commercial and critical success that this “unlikely” film has begun to generate. As she said in a recent interview with Access Hollywood: “I can’t believe that these characters I invented are now embodied on this big screen.”
Ms. Genova gives dynamic presentations on writing as well as on Alzheimer’s disease. If you are interested in inviting her to speak at your next event, contact Books In Common.
