"I truly have never seen my students more engaged or enthralled with anything like they were yesterday. I saw them relate to this book in such a personal way and then being able to actually have the author come and explain the real story behind the story to them was so beneficial for their understanding and comprehension of the text. I saw my ELL students come alive like never before when she talked about her experiences as an immigrant from Mexico and her struggles with learning English."
-- Melody Mills, Fort Smith Schools (AR)

"What a treat! [Guadalupe's] message to the students was powerful and life changing. They listened to her respectfully and many approached her at the end of her presentation to talk or have their picture taken with her. One of the students at the night presentation told her "You are my hero!". This is certainly an experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives."
-- Ines Robles, Fort Smith Schools (AR)

Reviews of Under the Mesquite

With poignant imagery and well-placed Spanish, the author effectively captures the complex lives of teenagers in many Latino and/or immigrant families.
-- Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

This book will appeal to many teens for different reasons, whether they have dealt with the loss of a loved one, aspire to write and act, are growing up Mexican American, or seeking their own identity amid a large family. Bravo to McCall for a beautiful first effort.
