Will Grant

Will Grant Will Grant was born and raised outside Denver, Colorado. After college, he worked as a cowboy and a horse trainer in Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas, where he apprenticed under the legendary horseman Jack Brainard. In 2008, he pivoted to a career in journalism. His writing has appeared in Outside magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal, as well as regional publications throughout the West. His efforts to combine horses and storytelling have included a 600-mile horse race across Mongolia, an expedition to find gold in Arizona, and two trips to Kyrgyzstan to play the most dangerous horseback game on the planet, called kok boru.

The Last Ride of the Pony Express is his first book, sharing the story of what he saw, who he met, and what happened on his 2,000 mile journey. Will undertook the journey as a largescale exercise in horsemanship with the goal of achieving a boots-on-the-ground understanding of the famed Pony Express mail service while transecting the cultural West. He set out to meet the people and learn about their lives in all the places that he’d never been to along the trail. He owes a debt of gratitude to everyone who helped and supported him during his summer on horseback—the journey would not have been possible without them.

Will currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his partner, Claire Antoszewski, and two dogs, three chickens, and five horses.
